IOS AMIGA EMULATOR UPDATE
In additional there is rumour that they are in talks with an unnamed major mobile publisher (Gameloft?) that's very interested in putting Amiga classics in the hands of today's gamers.Īllowing developers to publish their ageing Amiga back catalogue into the App store could be very interesting to them, because as it is using an Amiga emulator it doesn't require the developers to recode and update the games. Also current discussions with others to secure iOS releases include Factor 5 (Turrican I, II and III), The Bitmap Bros (Xenon II), Magnetic Fields (Supercars), Cope-Com (Battle Squadron), and Archer MacLean (IK+). In addition other Cinemaware titles confirmed are It came from the Desert, Winds and a few others. The biggest announcement so far for developers joining forces is Cinemaware, and the official announcement of Defender of the Crown being released in the App store, running using iAmiga. However there has been mention of some Amiga developers joining up with iAmiga's developer in order to use the emulator to re-release some of their most famous Amiga games onto the iPhone, and eventually the iPad (once iAmiga gets an official iPad version to support the larger screen). No news yet on an official release date for the emulator itself.

Cloanto maybe?Īnyway, down the details of iAmiga. The question is, who is this Commodore he is paying to license it? The current kickstart rom license owners? We haven't known the real answer to that question in a long time. The Official part is because he is said to be making the emulator under license from Commodore, to make it all legal and above board, I'm assuming as a way to agree it to be allowed into the App Store. an "official" Amiga emulator called iAmiga. The same developer, Manomino, is now back with something even better. You might also know that a C64 emulator was finally allowed to be released/published on the App store last year, after Apple changed their policies in how Apps could be coded, and after talks between the developer of the C64 App and Apple it was given the green light.

But perhaps with all the big browser players (Google, Microsoft, Mozilla and Apple) now backing webAssembly as the replacement for Javascript which should see a major improvement in the speed of browser based apps we may yet see an Amiga emulator that is truly cross platform and can run at full speed in the browser. As most will know the iPhone has been thin on the ground as far as emulation goes due to the closed wall policy of Apple and its App Store. There is of course the Scripted Amiga Emulator which runs an in any web browser that is capable of HTML5 and Javascript but when I tested this it was just too slow to be of any use on a tablet.

It is a pity that is does support iOS versions of Chrome though as Amiga Emulation is all but impossible on an iPad or iPhone without jail breaking or having a developer license since Apple don’t allow emulators that allow you to load ROMs in the App store.

It may not support the full features of some Amiga Emulators but could certainly give a nice boost of retro Amiga without the need to install an emulator. This is an impressive technical feat and something that only a few years ago would have been impossible to do.

Although the emulator is cross platform working on Windows, MacOS and Linux versions of the Chrome browser it does not yet support Android or iOS. The developer of the emulator took about a month to port and tweak the UAE source code from the C programming langauge to native client. There is no way of providing your own ROM files. if you want to run your own Amiga games ADF files on the emulator you will need to buy the Amiga Forever Chrome plugin. This allows you to boot up the emulated Amiga and have a play around with it some demos supplied. The emulator uses official Kickstart ROMs supplied by Cloanto and a copy of Workbench 1.3. This allows users of the Chrome web browser to run an Amiga A500 in their browser window with no additional software requirements. To show off the power of the native client software for the Chrome browser Google developer Christian Stefansen has ported over the free UAE Amiga Emulator to run under native client.
